Chatham Blanketeer Vol. 5 JUNE 26, 1939 No. 20 BULL DOGS WIN CHAMPIONSHIP Winning Bull Dogs Given Championship Awards Members of Winning Team Are Awarded Gold Soft Balls at Meeting Last Monday As a climax to its first softball tournament, the Thurmond Chatham Unity Club last Monday night presented awards — gold sohballs—to the membsrs of the winning office force team and to two other friends of the club. Presentation of the awards was made at a supper immediate ly following the fifth and decid ing game of the series between the spinning room and the office force. The office team won, 4 to 3. The meeting of the organiza tion was held in the clubhouse on the hill behind the factory. Presi dent Clyde Cothren presided. Those receiving the awards were: Clyde Cothren, S. M. Beale, Raymond Chatham, Mont Jones, Sam Neaves, Bug Page, John Sa- gar, Clay Pelts, Gavin Dortch and A'o Crater. Members of the win ning team not present were: Hugh and Dick Chatham, A softball was also presented to C. J. Hyslup for his interest in the club and his assistance in promoting the tournament. Bob Boles received an award for back- team, and Gene Hall, a member of the club, was given one for his activity as field manager. Frank Spencer, sports editor of The Twin-City Sentinel, was the main speaker. He briefly review ed the history of softball and told of its growing popularity. Officers of the T. C. U. Club, in addition to President Cothren, are; Henry Woodruff, vice presi dent; Hugh Salmons, secreta treasurer; Ab Crater, assia|^t secretary-treasurer; and jd. J. Hyslup, director. GARY FLOYD’S CAl DESTROYED BY FIl Gary Floyd, of the I Nap]^ Department, had the misfort to lose his 1938 Willis ^tomobil which was destroyed by fire earl; Friday morning, June 16. SAFETY GROUP IS COMPLETE Safety Man Is Appointed in Each Department on Each Shift at Committee Meeting With the announcement of the various departmental safety chairmen the personnel of the safety organization in the Elkin plant is complete. At a recent meeting of the safety committee and the plant foremen, it was de cided that a safety man would be appointed in each department on each shift. U^n their fmnd cars tire group Ikin where, Edward Roosevelt York, 36, of Jonesville, died Sunday in Duke hospital, Durham, from a brain tumor. The deceased was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Baptist church and was a son of J. M. York, of Winston-Salem, and the late Mrs, York. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bessie Hemric York, one daugh ter, Hazel, his father, four brothers, F. W. and M. C. York, cf Winston-Salem, Cy York, of Mt. Airy, and Carson York, of Ronda, and four sisters, Mrs. Tyre Felts, of Thomasville, Mrs. Spencer McNeill and Mrs, Thom as Bass, of Winston-Salem, and Mrs, Ernest Myers, of Elkin, Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock from the Pleasant Ridge Baptist church. Interment was in the church cemetery.
